SETTING THE STAGE
Protothon Hackathon 2023
At Dubstech's yearly Hackathon, participants were offered four prompts spanning different sectors – Classic, Enterprise, Femtech, and AI. My team chose the enterprise category and tackled the following design challenge:
Your task is to design an applicant tracking and hiring platform that makes it easier to manage and evaluate top talent from a sea of job applications, reducing time-to-hire and improving the candidate experience.
UX Design recruiters lack a standardized, step-by-step procedure to review potential candidate portfolios. Additionally, there is often a miscommunication between the recruiter and hiring manager on candidate job requirements.
PROBLEM
SOLUTION
UXTrace
A portfolio scanning tool to streamline the recruitment process for UX Design candidates
Through research and interviews with recruiters, we identified the absence of standard portfolio review guidelines and issues with unfit candidate submissions. UXTrace helps recruiters to save time and ensure a consistent and objective evaluation of candidates.
RESEARCH
Identifying the users’ target pain points
User Personas
UXTrace’s features allow the recruiter to share more relevant candidates to the hiring manager
What Problems are Recruiters Experiencing?
After identifying our target user, my team and I decided to conduct secondary research by browsing Reddit recruiting forums, assessing for patterns, and interviewing a few recruiters via text.
Based on our insights, I noticed the following pain points…
Recruiters reported that reviewing portfolios consumes a significant amount of time.
Reviewing is Time Consuming
Recruiters don’t have a set standardized way of evaluating portfolios.
Evaluation Issues
Hiring managers are receiving candidates from the recruiter that not qualified for the position
Candidates are the Wrong Fit
Competitive Analysis
CURRENTLY, NO HR SOFTWARE IN THE MARKET OFFERS A PORTFOLIO SCANNING TOOL
While there is a gap in the market for a portfolio scanning tool, I conducted a thorough competitive analysis of the most used HR hiring tools, and noticed the following weaknesses:
Poor filtering of candidates based on qualifications
Interview guide and scorecards are not intuitive
Limited customization for candidate postings
IDEATION
Solidifying ideas for a scanning tool
Idea Generation
After thoroughly understanding the recruiter and hiring manager’s perspective and addressing gaps in the market, my team and I started generating ideas to address user pain points.
Breaking Down the Recruitment Process
To break down the recruitment process, our team created a user journey map to separate each step. From here, I noticed that the screening section particularly had more challenging pain points, and our team decided on a portfolio scanning plugin as our solution.
Understanding Recruiter and Hiring Manager Workflows
To map out key features of the plugin, we created user flows that follow both the recruiter and hiring manager’s work flows
BRANDING
UI Design System
For an elegant, professional feel, our team decided on a purple color palette as part of the branding. I designed the logo based on symbols from the phrase “contract-tracing,” hence the name of the product: UXTrace
